Donald Trump leads the race to win the Republican nomination

Donald Trump has pulled ahead of Joe Biden in the national polls with only two months left before the Republican primaries begin.

The former president also remains the outright frontrunner in the Republican race, and a handful of candidates have already started to withdraw their campaigns.

Tim Scott, a senator for South Carolina, became the latest hopeful to suspend his presidential campaign on Sunday.

Former vice president Mike Pence remains the most high profile candidate to withdraw his nomination, saying: “It’s become clear to me: this is not my time.”

Five of the remaining candidates faced off in the third Republican debate in Miami in a bid to boost their ratings: Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, Tim Scott and Chris Christie.

Despite once again being missing from the official event, Mr Trump's popularity among GOP voters endures.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis is trailing in second place, with Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, in third, followed by businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

If the polls prove accurate then several candidates could have difficulty in sustaining their campaigns after the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries and the Iowa Caucus.

The former president’s position as the frontrunner has only strengthened despite his ongoing legal troubles in New York.

Mr Trump took the stand to testify in his $250m civil fraud trial earlier this month, becoming the first former president in more than 100 years to testify in court as a defendant.

The case is just one of many causing trouble for the former president as he continues his presidential bid.
